Silver is nearing a potential breakout, with rising lease rates, plunging London Bullion Market Association inventories, and robust industrial demand signaling a tightening market and strong upside potential.
Andy Schectman, the President and CEO of Miles Franklin Precious Metals, notes that silver demand is surging alongside gold, especially in China, where Shanghai vaults added 53,000 kg in a week. He adds that countries like India, Russia, and others are moving away from paper assets to physical metals. Silver is attracting investor interest, with market analysts predicting a potential leap to 40 dollars per troy ounce in 2025.
While discussing the market trends, Schectman notes that gold recently hit record highs above 3,150 dollars, yet there's little media coverage or retail excitement. He calls it a period of "stealth accumulation" led by central banks and large investors. According to the World Gold Council, gold buying by central banks has hit record highs. Many of these purchases are made by countries trying to protect themselves from potential US policy risks.
From his technical perspective, Schectman recalls Germany's gold repatriation from the US in 2013, which took four years to complete. When the gold was returned in 2017, the bars had different serial numbers, raising trust concerns. He highlights this as a major red flag for custodial transparency. Senior officials from Germany's Christian Democratic Union are discussing plans to withdraw Germany's gold reserves from New York. The reported deliberations stem from fears that the Trump administration's policies may further erode the United States' standing as a reliable partner.
German lawmakers are expressing doubts about the safety of their gold reserves stored in the US Federal Reserve, questioning the long-standing agreement and calling for more transparency.
Expert and analyst Andy Schectman points to intense market volatility, possibly driven by efforts to flush out long positions. He sees gold as the best asset for wealth preservation, while silver, though more volatile, offers bigger upside potential. Schectman warns that the dollar has lost 35% of its value against gold in under a year, with more weakness likely if rate cuts proceed. While most de-dollarization narratives are easy to dismiss, what is happening now differs. It is not autocracies trying to bypass the dollar; America's closest allies wonder if they can still rely on it.
In 2025, gold is evolving from a cyclical inflation hedge to a structural allocation as global investors respond to institutional instability and geopolitical realignment. Moreover, Schectman says Trump's tariffs and market turmoil erode trust in the fiat system. He calls the gold tariff talk a distraction, pointing instead to rising physical gold deliveries and Germany's vault concerns as signs of deeper distrust. The trend, he says, is about removing counterparty risk and holding assets directly.
